Banned Thought in Ireland and Political Statements
Prevented from Reaching the People
In Ireland, as in so many other countries, much of the real news about what is happening to the working class and the poor, is suppressed, or at the very least is not widely reported. And for reasons like this the claims that Ireland enjoys a true “democracy” and “a free press” are gross exaggerations of the real situation. We at BANNEDTHOUGHT.NET will try to help break down this de facto government and media news embargo.
At the same time we hope to provide documents and other information which further exposes the continuing occupation of a part of Ireland by the British imperialists, and to provide information about the long struggle to force Britain out of all of Ireland!
We will also be posting a number of suppressed or very difficult to find documents of the Irish revolutionary movement. As in much of the rest of the world, new revolutionary groups are coming into existence in Ireland in response to the growing economic misery of the people.
If you know of other suppressed documents and news reports that should be posted here, contact us at: freespeech@bannedthought.net
Suppression of News and Ideas in Ireland
- At present (2025) the “Censorship of Publications Acts” in Ireland still exist, although it is said that “they have been largely inactive since 2016”. The Irish government is also said to be moving to repeal those acts, and if they do so this will formally end the practice of banning printed publications. However, Ireland is now implementing its new Digital Services Act (DSA) which will require online platforms to take down illegal content, including what the government considers to be “terrorist material”. On the other hand, an archive of often-banned Irish Republican publications is now being created and made available online; but only, perhaps, because these are now only historical documents.
- Of course all capitalist societies effectively keep most revolutionary documents from reaching the masses, through the combination of economics and the virtual monopoly the rich have on the ownership of newspapers and publishing houses, as well as radio and TV stations.

— NOTICE —
Due to the repressive legislation and judicial decisions in the United States, we at BANNEDTHOUGHT.NET want to make it completely clear that we do not have any connection whatsoever with any organizations in the Republic of Ireland, or in British-controlled “Northern Ireland”, or in any other country for that matter. We do not aid, promote, assist, support, coordinate with, or provide any sort of services or advice to any Irish or other party. However, we do support the right of free speech, and the right of the people in both Ireland and internationally to read the views and publications of all parties and organizations in Ireland or relating to that country. And for this reason alone we are making copies of many of their documents available on this site.
